TFSG is investing in battery thermal management to prolong life and increase useable energy.
TFSG battery development is Cell and Technology independent. Our development is relevant to future solid-state batteries as well as modern liquid Li-Ion solutions. Developments at TFSG can be applied to a variety of form factors including cylindrical, prismatic and pouch. Below you can see thermal imaging of an uncooled cylindrical cell under destructive test at TFSG. Units are ºF. Only by finding the limits can we know the weak points and true capabilities of a battery cell – the basic building block of all battery systems.
Thermal Image: Cylindrical Cell Destructive Testing
Battery design at TFSG is truly custom; based solely around customer needs. “Bespoke” battery manufacturers tend to shoehorn products into existing frames or form factors convenient for reproduction, rather than optimized for your solution. Furthermore, thermal management of the solution tends to be an afterthought and typically a limiting factor in performance. Below is an overlay of a cooled vs. uncooled cell test at TFSG. By cooling the battery cell (blue), it can be repeatedly used well beyond the manufacturers stated limitations. An uncooled solution (orange) with the same duty cycle will fail during the first cycle.
Based on experience at TFSG, custom battery manufacturers offer product specifications without guarantees. Our staff has not witnessed a custom battery solution perform at or exceed manufacturer ratings. TFSG remains committed to under-promising and overdelivering on all solutions - including custom batteries. Accuracy and repeatability are an important part of providing a solution we can stand behind. Below you can see an overlay of two separate non-destructive tests of the same cell type with the same duty cycle. Total Energy over the event differed by less than 1.5% between cells. A statistically relevant sample of 7 or more tests is typically required by TFSG for full assessment.
